Have you tried the 20 gauge? It's in the 5-1/2 pound range, much lighter than the 12 which runs over 7. When it comes to recoil, the 20 gauge might be just as stiff, if not worse, than the 12 gauge. I've found if recoil is the issue a full size 12 with a one ounce load is the best combination.

I have put my hands on a 20 gauge 391 but haven't fired one. My 6.5 over/under in 20 gauge recoils just as much as my 12s. That said, the 20 gauge 391 really appealed to me and would be my choice for a light upland gun if I decided to give up my sxs.
