Sure you didn't get a spring for a 12 or 16 gauge? A new one sure shouldn't be larger.
Do you have the friction rings set right? If you don't, the gun will kick a lot and you could damage the gun. Also, are you sure it is for 2 3/4 shells? I think it should be, but I am not sure and if you are not either, best have a gunsmith check it.
