If you're looking at SA . . . I'd second the Rough Rider. I have one in a 4 3/4" barrel and I love it . . it's always in my range bag. I have more expensive pistols . . . but my RR is a great "knock around" pistol. Functions well, shoots great and is a great value . . . and I don't worry about it getting holster wear or a nick now and then. If I were starting a kid out, one would be my choice for that. Once they get the basics down . . . then I'd move them up into a decent DA 22.
