When hunting around for guns my wife an I also took into account what ammo was available. This being said we picked out a .270 for her, my Dad has one and has had absolutely no complaints about it. We also looked into 30-06 but the kick might be a bit much for her.
In Texas area the 30-60, 7mm, .270 ammo are widely available while .308, .30-30, and .243 are rare
