The easy answer would be a NIB Ruger SR40c or if you had the $, a SIG Sauer DAK P224 or P229R. The mid size, lightweight Beretta PX4 C format is a great value. I owned a PX4 9x19mm in 2009.
I like DA only format pistols but there are many well made brands in the mid size line.
Rent or borrow a few & blast away.
