If you are serious about actually carrying, you need a belt. No matter what holster you've got, it won't work nearly as well as it should because it needs a belt to support the holster and gun.
I'd even argue that the belt is equally, if not more important than the holster when carrying any thing bigger than a pocket gun.

A belt will allow your holster to be both comfortable and functional. Without one, you'll be constantly trying to keep the gun and holster in place.
