I always thought a reliable and well made .38/.357 lever action would make an excellent home defense carbine.
The only problem is that good ones are hard to find.
A 30/30 is fairly close, ballistic wise to the AK's 7.62x39. That would be a good second choice.
Another good option is an Enfield Carbine. The No.5 or a No.4 modified to a carbine. The cock on closing action is quick and smooth. Good peep sights, 10 round magazine. Quick loading with stripper clips. .303 ammo is not to common though, although it's a great round.
