If money were not an issue for me, or really saving money to spend on other guns and ammo were not an issue, I'd take a hard look at an HK. That said I really like the ruger sr40c, feels great in your hand very similar feel to the fn 40, which I also like. CZ makes some nice 40s also, the CZ SP01 is reasonably concealable, shoots very well, reliably, but only holds 10...so CA friendly.
