You're right. They expect to win the day with heavy-handed emotional appeals, and the general public doesn't buy those as well as they used to. Their immediate capitalization on Sandy Hook is a good example. In their rush to capitalize, they really came off as morbid and opportunistic, and many folks noticed that.
