In that price range, I'd look at a good S&W 2nd Gen 9mm, like the 659. I think the 3rd gen 9mm's are going for a bit more now, more like the first price range you posted. The 659 is a good looking, solid stainless steel, large capacity 9mm that will last you a lifetime. It is also fairly accurate and very reliable.
