Everyone has an opinion, but in general something you carry is usually shorter.
For home you're not limited by what you can stuff in your pants so it makes sense to take advantage of a longer barrel, but keep in mind if it's too long it gives more leaverage to a bad guy trying to wrestle it out of your hands and it may not be as manuverable.
Here's my breakdown.
Carry 2-3"
Home 3-5"
Hunting 5-7"
Range doesn't matter.
