You are mistaken. The singular of data is datum. Datum is defined as
something given or admitted especially as a basis for reasoning or inference.
Anecdote is defined as
A short account of an interesting or humorous incident.
If you put anecdotes together, you have a collection of anecdotes. You don't have data.
