@roc1: My experience has been pretty much the same as yours. Given manufacturing vagaries, I know there has to be a bad savage out there somewhere, but I've never found or seen one.

Some will disagree, but rugers from the 70's and 80's never gave me better than hunting accuracy (2 to 3 inch, 3 shot groups at 100 yds). However, rugers manufactured in the past 10 to 15 years seem to have closed the performance gap with other rifles. I have ruger KVT's chambered for .204 ruger and .22 hornet. The accuracy potential of both rifles is better than my skill.

So if the .243 ruger, which you're considering, is recently manufactured, then I would go for it.
