I am very confident in my .270 long action, and if the WSM performs to that level, even without surpassing it, it is a great caliber for what you said. 130 grain Nosler BT with 59.0 gr. of H-4831. The WSM claims to be flatter. I have shot one (never chronographed it though) and the recoil was almost identical to my long action.
