In the end game, there is still nothing more important than keeping your night vision intact. The reflection from your 'bright light' will cause your pupils to contract and reduce your vision for several minutes.

In the woods I may blip a red filter on and off if it's execptionally dark or I hear a Rattlesnake.

For home defense. It's mine and I know my way around, I'd prefer the BG in the dark and not knowing where he is.
