As far as the AK is concerned, the price of them has gone through the roof recently due to the current political situation and you may not be able to find one for under $800.

As far as the SKS is concerned, I see no reason to get one of those when the Mini will do everything the SKS will do just as well or better and is made by a reputable American company which is well-known for standing behind its products and excellent customer service. I have seen some terribly shoddily made SKSs (a lot of them were manufactured by Communists, the same people who couldn't make a ball bearing that was round) and if you get one that's a lemon, good luck getting the company that manufactured it to do anything about it.

IMO, the choice is clear: Mini-30.
