'Very old ' ? The cartridge has been around a long time -back from the 1800s !
About 1905 the bullet diameter was changed to the present one .Is the rifle a military one , if so what are the markings ? That will tell you when and where it was made .Many were brought here after the war and in various guises were left as is or made into very fine custom rifles.
