The run on pistol mags happened the same time as it did for the AR mags. Some people just did not notice they were sold out of most of the popular makes and model gun mags 1.5 months ago.

I bought 2 new pistols back in early Dec (Pre Sandyhook) and mags could be had for just about any pistol a couple weeks later (Post Sandyhook) and they were gone.
