I find this a bit strange. First off, don't they still have a "lifetime" warranty?
Now, the last time I had a problem with a Taurus, they never asked me for the serial number. All I did, was mail it in and after a couple of tries, they made the fix at no cost to me. Why don't you just send the darn thing in and be sure to track it. ....
