I can't put it any better than Mel Tappan in his books on survival. I differ with him in some details, but he pretty much had the concepts right.

One thing for sure, doing the Bugout Boogie into the wilderness is for maybe a few hundred, total, out of all the tens of thousands of folks who think they can do that. Nothing like a crowd of mutually hostile folks, fighting over those caches.
