I've never had a handgun with fiber-optic sights so can't offer any insight on them. For self defensive use, I guess it depends on where/how you think it'll be put to use.

In my case, my EDC has a set of SIG night sights on it, which is good for day/night usage. For home defense, I swear by a set of CT laser grips on a 1911. That way I don't have to fumble for my glasses on the nightstand.
