Were they initially just built out of available M16 parts? If so, would there be any way of saying "no, this is an M16, not XM177 receiver"? In the mid-sixties there might not have been as much concern with markings.

I think we need someone in Florida to make a pilgrimage to Knights to see what Reed has in his collection.
