Magazine in, safety off, chamber empty. If the situation is so periless that I haven't got time to recognize the situation and rack the slide I will more than likely already be a victim. I have 3 dogs in the house and one has a sense of hearing that simply amazes me. It can hear someone walking up the driveway and goes into alert. Once she goes into alert in the middle of the night I will grab my pistol and be ready for whatever action is necessary.
My personal choice is I would rather have that extra split second to rack the slide and become fully aware than pull the pistol and maybe shoot someone inadvertantly. I am not suggesting anyone do what I do but that is my choice.
