It seems that there are no two lists alike. That's what keeps the cartridge, barrel, component, die, gunsmith, and gun companies in business.

My list is fairly short and "needs" driven:

.22LR
.22 WMR
.223 REM
.243 WIN
.270 WIN
.30-06

I keep pistol calibers in pistols these days, but once had an O/U in .357 Mag, cause I didn't have much money and cast a lot of bullets.

I stay away from big-kicking magnums because I don't hunt anything larger than moose and can shoot well enough to kill anything in Maine with a .270Win or .30-0...even beyond 400 yards. There aren't many places where you can even SEE that far where we hunt.

The .22WMR is falling out of favor with me, except for shooting relatively small critters, including woodchucks around the house, and sometimes it takes a few shots to kill one. Only one is needed with a .223 Rem, so the cost is less (but it's quite a bit louder).
