Hodgdon H-110 was manufactured for this very purpose. It worked well in the M1 carbine that the DCM sold me in 1967 for $17 (it turned out to be a brand new Winchester, made in 1959!).

Just be aware that this is not a cartridge to hot rod with. It is working a lot closer to the proof level than most cartridges, as the performance from early ammo was less than expected, so the working pressure was just increased without strengthening the gun.
