Mount the scope like you plan, place the rifle in a rest so it doesn't move, remove the bolt and look down the barrel at a distant object. Are the object and the reticle aligned with each other? This is a great method for bore-sighting a scope but there's no expectation that the reticle will be properly aimed as soon as the scope is mounted.... in other words, finding that it's not doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the way the scope is mounted.
