Go to a gun show and look at the used revolvers. Or check the used pistols on Gunbroker and you will see that a high number have the beginning of a bolt drag ring.

I would say the drag ring on used single action revolvers is mostly caused by misuse. Mainly by letting the hammer down from half cock.
