Jroth, well said. You could not be more correct. That is the ONLY way to determine what YOUR maximum evvective range is. The better you can hold, the longer the range at which you can shoot. If you can't keep them all in a pie plate, you are too far away.
If compared with a rifle, any revolver is "underpowered". Accurate placement is really all that counts. Since you can't kill 'em with a bad hit with a rifle, you sure as h*** can't with a handgun.
Personally, I don't think remaining energy means too much. If the slug is put through the lungs, the deer is going down. I don't think that whether it's going 700 fps or 1200 fps at the time makes too much difference. I have taken deer with just about everything from a .38 Spl. to a .454 Casull. I have never lost a deer that was hit in the lungs.
Just my experience, I am no expert.
