Interesting that pumps are outlawed but semis are not, here in the states it would be the other way around, or soon will be with the current political climate. (those evil autoloaders and all)
I am not sure if they make a shorter barrel than the waterfowl barrels, but if they do, you could check out the Winchester Super X3, or browning golds/silvers. They are basically the same internal working parts. I find the recoil of the Winchester I just bought to be greatly lessened over fixed breach or even a Benelli Super Black Eagle I once had. You can fire off three shots very quickly and still remain on target. For self defense, if you can get one with a shorter barrel  I would look at it.
For sd ammo, I would stick with 00 buckshot.
