Apparently, yes. At my request, my wife and I watched
Starship Troopers the other night. (I love really bad science fiction for some reason,
and that one is, IMHO, one of the worst sci-fi movies of all time.) Anyway, I actually backed up the movie to verify what I thought I had seen. Turns out that the "troopers" were using what appeared to be a Mini-14 encased in a plastic shell (to make it look super-futuristic). The Internet Movie Firearms Database says it's a Ruger AC556.
