The 1187 is capable of shooting 3" shells and 3 1/2" shells with certain models. The 1100 is made for 2 3/4" only unless you have a magnum model or steel shot barrel for it. The 1187 has the self compensating gas system that allows it to vent any excess gas not needed to work the gas system where on the 1100 extra gas won't vent which could "beat up" your gun. The 1100 is more for trap and such where the 1187 is popular for hunting. I have heard much better reviews on the 1100 especially when it comes to reliability and the 1187 is hit or miss (some people get lucky while others get a real piece of garbage).
