Short range? 300 yards is a piece of cake for even a rather-short barrelled .308. Hunting shots beyond 200 yards are far less common than those within 200 yards. But I know from experience that with a field-expedient rest, 3X is adequate for a hit within one inch of my intended point of impact, at 350 yards.
