Dremel, I follow your reasoning but I offer a point to ponder.
There is a reason for the KISS principle: Reliability. By and large, simple = reliable. Ergo, the KIRS principle.
So, for an opinion, given the proven reliability of so many variable-power scopes, I see no violation of the KISS/KIRS principle in using a 1-5 scope on a Scout rifle.
As an old hot-rodder and car racer, I operate on the basis of, "If it works, it's good. If it don't, it ain't." So, natcherly, I gotta mess with stuff so it works to suit me.
