I would just buy one of the Beretta's and keep the Mak.

But if you must
trade, after that deal keep one Beretta, and trade the other one for a basic, bare bones 1911. Unless you want to become a dedicated "collector", it doesn't have to be a genuine milsurp 1911 which will save you mucho bucks. You will however have examples
of US military sidearms from 1911 to the current date.
Besides, when it comes down to your original queation, a 1911 is
a handgun that every shooter should have,
