You don't need a barrel vise, they are nice to have but not necessary. I've used action wrenches and even a crescent wrench on the recoil lug to take off the barrel. I just use a 4" vise with a leather padded jaw these days.

BTW if you use the ER Shaw kit you don't need to buy the gages the are included either the kit.
