Did you clean the gun prior to taking it to the range?

Are you SURE you have the recoil spring in right?

It is a fairly easy thing to reverse the spring and that will cause all kinds of functioning problems.

Some recoil springs are open on both ends but many are closed on one end.

If one end is closed, it needs to go onto the guide rod first.

I bought a new Smith and Wesson 1911E and the owners manual instruction was wrong. I had all kinds of problems until I called the service center and got it right.
