A weapon that can't be maintained properly will fail, it is only a matter of when. To get to the beretta's firing pin you have to take off the rear sights and numerous small parts of the safety and I forget what else. A complete detailed strip usually isn't required too often. Let's also not forget that the US military has armorers as well.
Know the status of your weapon
Keep your muzzle oriented so that no one will be hurt if the firearm discharges
Keep your finger off the trigger until you have an adequate sight picture
