I have almost always carried a handgun when hunting anything. Different ones at different times. Ruger Single Six 22 LR, Colt SAA 44 Spl, Ruger Blackhawk 44 Mag. Mostly belt carry strong side, though when hunting cats in the winter used a shoulder holster to keep it dry. Snow falling in/on an open carry often locked up the gun with ice. Since we most often hunted right after a fresh snow the brush was covered and a holster full of snow was sure to happen if it was open. On cat hunts we seldom carried anything but a handgun, so it better work when needed. Used dogs so if there was shooting to be done it was at close range. Couple of times the stupid cat would not tree, now if you want to get your adrenalin pumpin, wade into a cat and dog fight and end it with a handgun without killing a dog. Sometimes using the gun as a club was a better bet than shooting.
