Front site on Ruger SP101 3"bbl.

Gun shots great. But when I aim I have to cover the bullseye with the front sight for accuracy. I would like to cut down front sight so I can see bullseye on top of front sight when aiming like I see on instruction posters at the range on how to aim. Has anyone tried this? Is it a good idea? Thanks, Richard.
