But the bottom line is, the man was breaking no laws and was deprived of his right to vote.
I don't feel he was deprived of that vote.

He opted to let this issue take precedence over his right to vote, IMHO.
When the right to effective self-defence is denied, that right to self-defence which remains is essentially symbolic.
