You shouldn't be shooting an unarmed man, you only use deadly force to save your life or someone else's from eminent danger.

As far as what load to use, I keep 12ga 00 buck in my 870 which has a good light on it and a saddle with reinforcements

I wouldn't use anything less than #4 buck, bird shot is for shooting birds
