Back in the Civil War...
General John Geary was an Alcade (mayor) in San Francisco before the war. He served in Sherman's Army.
I forgot which book I read it in but he got some of the boys -CENSORED--CENSORED--CENSORED--CENSORED--CENSORED--CENSORED- off. The boys pounced on him and pummeled him. Afterwards, they fled into the crowd. After recovering, an angry Geary demanded from the audience the identity of his assailants, but nobody saw anything. The American Citizen Soldier was quite a different man back then. Today the Army, Army Reserves and National Guard all receive the same boot camp training and the likelihood of a soldier hitting an officer is remote or if he does, he'll pay for it.
