Bridgeport, CT – Today, a widely-anticipated lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Connecticut, challenging the constitutionality of the new firearms law that was passed hastily by the Connecticut legislature in response to the tragic shooting in Newtown by a disturbed individual. The lawsuit seeks immediate injunctive relief and a ruling declaring the new law unconstitutional under the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. It alleges that Connecticut’s new firearms law is not only unconstitutional but dangerous, since it makes both citizens and law enforcement less safe by depriving citizens of firearms that are in common use throughout the country. The very firearms and design features banned by the new law are commonly used in part because of safety, accuracy and ease-of-use features that make them effective in the hands of citizens who must defend themselves and their families against criminals and the mentally ill who do not obey such laws.

Brought on behalf of individual gun owners, retailers, and citizen’s defense and sportsmen’s organizations, the lawsuit seeks to vindicate the constitutional rights of citizens who are harmed by the broad prohibitions and unworkable vagueness of the new law. The legal challenge focuses on Connecticut’s ban of more than 100 additional common firearms that the law now dubs “assault weapons” and on the ban of standard design features, including magazines that hold more than 10 round of ammunition, that provide improved safety, accuracy, and ease-of-use. The lawsuit also challenges the practical bans imposed by the new law on an even broader array of firearms due to the law’s vague language and interpretative confusion combined with severe criminal penalties.

Plaintiffs bringing the lawsuit include individuals such as an elderly widow who lives alone in a rural area where the emergency response time of a lone resident trooper serving the area is 45 minutes, a rabbi whose synagogue in the Bridgeport area has been broken into by intruders, a young professional woman whose efforts to defend herself are made more difficult by the loss of an arm due to cancer, among other individuals. In addition, retailers whose businesses have been severely harmed by the law have joined the lawsuit, which was conceived and organized by fellow-plaintiff organizations the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, commonly known as CCDL, and the Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen. Both organizational plaintiffs represent large numbers of Connecticut citizens whose rights to own the firearms of their choice for self-defense and other lawful purposes, such as sports shooting and hunting, have been harmed by the new prohibitions.

Despite the new law being called “An Act Concerning Gun Violence Prevention and Children’s Safety,” Connecticut’s new firearms law makes Connecticut citizens less safe. Among the individuals harmed by the law’s provisions are women, the elderly, and anyone of a smaller physical stature -- individuals who typically lack the strength to operate older style, heavier, or difficult to use firearms and yet who need to be able to protect themselves in challenging home-invasion and other self-defense situations.

CCDL’s President, Scott Wilson, who has seen his organization’s membership grow from 2,500 to 7,600 in just a few months, says “On behalf of our members and all of the plaintiffs, we wish to thank the National Rifle Association, whose vision and stalwart defense of citizens’ fundamental rights has helped make this important legal challenge possible.” Wilson says, “Connecticut’s new gun ban violates Second Amendment rights by depriving law-abiding citizens of firearms that are in common use throughout the country precisely because of their known effectiveness in the protection of citizens, their families, and homes. Criminals and the mentally ill will not abide by this terrible law, which means it has the perverse effect of actually making citizens and law enforcement officers less safe.”

Hello:

I bought a Winchester 30-30 model 1894 at a gunshow the other day for $250. There was some finish loss on the receiver but everything else was in very good to excellent shape - bore is cherry.

I have never owned a gun of this type before. This is a shame - I actually love the gun and wouldn't mind picking up one or two of its brothers in the future, should the opportunity present itself.

I know people are not fond of the cartridge these days but I wonder if they aren't mistaken. I am given to understand that the 30-30 has killed a great many deer over the years. Were the deer of yesteryear made of sterner stuff or are we just all too alpha male these days to accept a caliber that merely does its job?

Anyway, a quick look on Gunbroker convinced me that I won't be buying any model 1866s, 1876s or 1886s. Big $$$. A model 71 is still almost within reach (if I could get it while the wife was looking the other way) but the one time I got to shoot a 348 it practically took my head off. I mean, that was some fierce recoil.

Sooooo - what is the price range for model 94 winchesters in good - but not necessarilly perfect - knick? Is there a big difference pre and post-64? The one I bought was made in 1971.

Thanks

Compared to the prices I see people paying for off-brand automatics of dubious quality I consider a made-in-America S&W for around $400 quite reasonable. If I overpaid, I am willing to be corrected.

I recently purchased a used but mint (I never buy new) Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt for $450. I admit I may have paid more for that one than I should have.

Anyway, I'd like to hear the opinions of my fellow shooters - is the current stampede toward high-capacity semi-autos working to the advantage of those of us in the six-gun crowd or am I deluding myself?

The shooting rest I have won't work with AR's. Has anyone used the Lead Sled Solo or the Deadshot Field Pod. I know the Deadshot is designed to be used for more field use vs sighting in but I wondered if it was stable enough for sighting in and then I can use it in the field as well. With the cost of ammo right now I don't want to shoot more than needed to zero, so I figured a good rest is worth the investment. Any other suggestions are appreciated as well. Thanks

Back in Feb. I sent in my paperwork for a CMP Garand, the paperwork went out on Feb 20th and they received it on the 27th. I knew it would be a long wait since the web site stated it would be anywhere between 30-60 days to fill the order. On April 23rd I sent an e-mail to them inquiring about the status of the order, I received an e-mail back the next day from Vicki who told me that she was currently working on NY orders from Feb 4th. I figured at least another 3 weeks before I'd here anything so I waited as patiently as I could checking the CMP web site every day as well as my checking account. Well today was the day, checked the account this morning and there were 3 charges from the CMP. This what I'd been waiting for except that when I totaled the 3 charges up it came up about $170 more than I was expecting. A quick check of my account at the CMPs e-store site and I was able to see my order finally. There's 1 order for the rifle, 1 for the ammo and 1 for the bayonet and en-bloc clips. At first glance I notice that they billed me $795 for the rifle but that couldn't be right since the HRA Service Grade rifle is still listed at $625 on their web site. As I was calling Vicki I realized that the item number for the rifle was wrong, the item number listed in the order is for a WRA rifle not an HRA rifle. So when I got Vicki on the phone I asked her about it, she quickly pulled my order form and told me that I had written the item number for the WRA rifle but the description for the HRA rifle. I explained to her that I only ordered the HRA because I thought they were completely sold out of WRA and Springfield rifles and that I would gladly take the Winchester rifle over the HRA. She explained to me that the CMP is not sold out of WRA rifles but their supplies are very low and they are no longer accepting orders for them (why they accepted mine is beyond me) so when the guys saw the WRA item number that's what they pulled. So the moral of the story is that my stupid mistake in the order form actually was a good thing, maybe someone is looking out for me. Order is processed and awaiting shipping which could take up to 2 weeks so if all goes well I should have it by the second week of June, I can't wait! Anyone else with an order in be patient, they're working on them.

I am new to the forum. I have a lot of experience with hunting, long range shooting, precision reloading, minor gunsmithing, and even dabbled in a couple 1K BR matches, but always looking to learn more :)

Anyhow I thought I'd begin my debut with a couple pics of the new 338-375 Ruger rifle I just got done building, and perhaps pick the brains of some of you that may have experience with this caliber. Looking for load data specifically, but any other input is much appreciated. I have the 250gr Berger Elite Hunter bullets on hand and that is the only weight I plan on shooting out of this rifle. Will be used mainly for hunting deer and elk.

Haven't fired one round through her yet, so I still need to break the barrel in then begin load development. Case capacity of the 338-375 Ruger is 1 gr of H2O more than the 340 Weatherby, so I believe I could start with medium load data pertaining to that caliber and work my way up. But would appreciate any info on loads used specifically for the 338-375R. Thanks Folks :)

Action: Remington 700 Stainless Magnum, lapped and blueprinted to barrel.
Barrel: Brux Stainless .338 1 in 10", Rem Sendero contour, finished at 26"
Stock: Bell & Carlson A2 Medalist, full aluminum skeleton, black with gray web
Optics: Bushnell Elite Tactical 4.5-30x50mm

Went to the range and shot a Glock 19. The target I used was had 4 regular bullseye targets on it. I shot 50 rounds.

I liked the gun. Tomorrow I am going to try a MP Shield 9. It is thinner and feels better in my hand at the counter, but I don't know yet if that will translate into more comfortable shooting.

Several questions:

Stance. I tried a wide-stance with feet even fore and back. knees bent. that's what they said to do, but it felt funny. With a lifetime of skiing and a bunch of sports I guess I am locked into wanting to put my left foot forward - still with a shoulder-width stance, but quite a fit forward. good or bad?

Target. Once I put 6 or 7 rounds into one of the targets I had a harder time determining which hole I had just done, so I started seeking out other "bullseyes" to shoot at. Afterwards the desk folks suggested just aiming at the littlest yellow circle in the middle of each target - to try to blow it out. I thought that sounded like fun. So what should I do - blast the center till there's a big hole, or try to shoot a circle till a blob falls off?

This is a fun activity.

I have seen that most of what I need is Backorder only. But I think, I would not mind placing my order with them, at least knowing, when it's available it will ship.
Has anyone ordered bullets from Sierra, that were back ordered? Just curious how things went. I am getting tired of checking my stores and sources everyday.

New Mexico has added Wyoming and Nevada to the list of states it Honors. Wyoming will again honor New Mexico as they will honor anyone who honors them.
http://www.dps.nm.org/index.php/nm-c...ty-agreements/

Alabama, Arkansas and Kansas in the next few months will honor all other states. KS on July 1, AR on July 17 and Alabama on Aug. 1. All these states have also amended their carry laws opening up places where those with a valid permit/license may carry and AL will now officially be a Shall Issue state. Those state pages will be updated on www.handgunlaw.us when their new laws go into effect.

Arkansas new law has the most questions. They have defined what a Journey is, “Traveling outside your county of residence.” Other wording changes in their law have some stating that AR will be an Open Carry state also. They do not allow Open Carry at this time. Authorities are stating that Open Carry will still not be legal so it looks like there will be some court cases soon after the new law goes into effect. Handgunlaw.us recommends that you not Open Carry in Arkansas when the new law goes into effect until they get it ironed out in with authorities or the courts.

WV has changed how it will honor other states. They will now honor anyone who honors them. WV should establish reciprocity with Alabama, Georgia and Colorado in the coming months. They could pick up a couple others. Time will tell there. This new law on Reciprocity doesn’t go into effect until July.

Other states are making changes. Mag limits and such with California actually outlawing the sale of all Auto Loading Pistols. With their Micro Stamping law passed in 2007 now in effect unless a pistol has that feature it can’t be sold in CA. I am very interested in how the manufacturers will handle this on selling their firearms in CA.

Again I want to thank those who give me a heads up on changes in their state laws etc. I can’t do this by myself and all your assistance is very much appreciated. Handgunlaw.us will be updated with changes that have taken effect in the last few days later this evening or early tomorrow. Thank you again.

I read the package and it really does not explain.

I have a Savage model 10FXP .308 and I'm looking to upgrade it a little. It has an accutrigger and a standard contour barrel along with an original non-accustock. I've also got a redfield revolution 3-9x40 scope with leopold mounts and rings. I'm pretty sure it has a center feed mag (it stays in the stock when I remove it).

I use the rifle primarily for deer hunting and some paper punching. Its kind of my do all rifle. I generally like it, but i hate the flimsiness of the stock. So the main question, what are my options for upgrading the stock? I want to keep it a lightweight hunting rifle and I don't mind the blind magazine. I hear accustocks cost an arm and a leg from savage and its not worth the effort to bed the factory stock. I've looked at some hogue stocks but they seem to be for detachable box mags. I don't want to spend much more than $200 or so.

So if I get a different stock will the mag just switch into the new stock? Will I have to switch to a hinged floor plate? is that possible? I Don't want to spend $200 on a kit to switch to a detachable box mag bottom metal only to spend another $100 for extra mags.

Thanks for the help guys.

On the walk home tonight I caught the second half of a radio show called World Have Your Say, broadcast by the BBC World Service.

It is a forum where the producers pick the subject from around the world that seems to have had the most traffic on social media. I don't know what the news item or event was, but the show was being broadcast from a gun-shop in Austin, Texas. They were discussing US gun politics, Concealed Carry Licence trends, and the potential role of the armed citizen.

Part of the formula of the programme is they get either experts in the given field or willing members of the public with a vested interest to talk, discuss and answer questions, live on air.
The programme allows for anyone to call in, text, tweet or leave a Facebook message if they have a comment or question for the guests.
Not all get answered in an hour, but there is usually a good spread. I wrote in, but my message didn't get picked I'm afraid...:(

The shop owner and host gave an over-view of his role as a gun-shop owner and "FFL" (correct?) dealer and guests had a chance to introduce themselves and give some background to their views, including whether or not they carried routinely.

True to the BBC practice, they had representatives from both sides of the debate, to give equal opportunity for an balanced discussion.

The link to the programme which should now be online to listen to through the web is HERE.

It was only an hour or so ago, but is already online.

There were a couple of issues that caught my attention that I thought might be of interest to TFL members:

Firstly, I noted one of the supporters of full background checks touted the "90% of Americans support universal background checks" statistic that I seem to recall TFL members have claimed is false: if that is the case, it still seems to carry weight with some.

Secondly, and more surprisingly, was a comment by the gun owner that I caught halfway through that made me stop in my tracks: I don't know if TFL members are aware of.
If I understood correctly, the shop owner said that if a customer comes in to buy two guns at the same time of certain types (one I think was the semi-auto rifle type but I can't remember the second type to trip this "alarm"), then the gun shop owner would call the FBI and, without the customer's knowledge, tell them the customer's name, as well as the serial numbers of the guns in question.
This seems odd, unless it is the shop owner's own practice as part of being conscientious...

Interestingly, no one mentioned, as far as I heard, the 2nd A'ment in terms of "defence against tyranny". It was all about SD.

Have a listen if you think you might be interested.

By the way, I am just putting this here for people's interest, not to start some sort of slagging match: whatever the views might be, let's be nice!!

I have contacted customer service. They've so far basically said they are sorry and that I should let them know if anything is missing and they'll make it right.

I told them that the problem is that the bullets may not even be fit to shoot after being handled like this, and I don't really feel like sitting and counting how many I have in order to tell them what is missing.

I'll post follow up as soon as I hear back from them.

I found this gun in the handgun case at my friendly, local gun shop on the day before Thanksgiving last November. It is a Colt Police Positive .38 S&W First Issue. It has a factory nickel finish and appears to have Colt factory MOP grips, although they are not numbered to the gun. It has no wear of any kind and appears to be unfired. A name is engraved on the right side of the frame. A couple of minutes on the internet identified the name as that of a long term police chief of a medium-sized Midwestern city in the early nineteenth century. The letter I obtained from Colt says the gun was shipped as a single unit to a large hardware retailer in Chicago in November, 1914. This leads me to think that it might have been a presentation piece. It is clear the Chief never carried or fired this gun. I am pursuing leads for further provenance regarding this interesting revolver.
Last trip to my LGS showed 325 WSM as one of the few calibers with an adequate choice of ammo available, leaving me with the question if I can just get BLR barrel in 325 and swap it in. Bolt face should be the same, and if needed, I can get a 325 magazine.
Does anyone have any experience if this is possible?

If I am to drain the pot, is there any cleaning that needs to be done before putting the pot away? Thanks for any advice!

A bear attack in Wisconsin notches up another vote for the trusty shotgun. A gal wielding a shotgun used it to save her husband who was being attacked by a bear but she used it Louisville slugger style and hit the bear over the head with it because she didn't know how to load or shoot it.

Husband and wife made it back into their cabin okay and a LEO was called. The bear was still circling the cabin an hour later when the LEO arrived. The officer killed the bear with one shot but the story doesn't say what the officer used.

You can read about it here:
http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/...-saves-husband

or see a video report of it here (which includes pictures of the bear at the window of their cabin.)

P.S. Another reason to teach your significant other how to use your guns and hats off to a pretty gutsy gal.

P.P.S I wonder if I should get MY wife a heavy barreled varmit gun...
