Hi All,

Had a police trade in 870 follow me home today. It's a bit rough around the edges but fundamentally sound. The chief problem is that it seems to be a parts gun. The receiver has some serious surface rust and has cleaned up OK, except for the roughness. Barrel looks brand new. Trigger group and bolt are antiseptic.

I have toyed with the idea of sending it off for a bead blast and a hard chrome - sort of a poor mans Marine Magnum. Maybe toyed is a bit weak - I've sort of setteled on the two mentioned below.

I know a lot of 1100/870 trap and skeet shooters did this in the '70's. Shot a couple and thought the idea had merit, especially in the South.

Any thoughts? Recommendations? I'm leaning towards either Metalife in PA or Coogan's in FL.

Adding that hard chrome finish to a shotgun as durable as the 870 will result in a weapon that will endure well into the next Ice Age(G), Giz.

You may want to check with Robar, they had a black chrome finish a while back that was not as flashy but just as good as the regular kind.

And congrats on the new toy. I'm "Toying" with the idea of getting another salvaged receiver and building Frankenstein II.

Also highly regarded is Ford's Custom Plating, according to many on the P7 forum who have been happy with the service and quality received.

The link that I've used before - www.fordsguns.com - doesn't seem to be working. I'm sorry if it isn't current. They're in FL.

Here's a link to a good post on Park Cities Tactical, comparing work from a variety of regarded shops:

Lots of good info there, especially on the P7 forum, that will make for a good evening of research.

Please keep us posted on this project!
