Hello,

I think I'm about to buy a Remington 870 Super Express.

Can I use Steel shot? Are there any restrictions as to what choke I can use while firing Steel through it?

Can I use any brand of ammunition I want, like Federal, Remington, or Winchester? In my current Mossberg, it only likes Federal. Anything else will cause it to jam up.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Erick

Steel is fine in the new 870's and even the old ones. Steel does not open up like lead does so choose your choke accordingly.

You're fine with steel in the gun itself. Some of the Remington (and other mfgs) choke tubes recommend lead only for the particular choke tube models.

I'd go with Modified for steel. Otherwise, no restrictions.

Older Full choke guns of any sort should not be used with steel. Sometimes it just bulges the bbl, sometimes they crack.

Also, there's some expensive but effective non toxic loads now like the Tungsten compounds. The price should drop some in a few years, and they perform like lead.
