Who knows what the history of this gun is specifically the later model K38 Masterpiece. Was this the model 14-5 or were their later versions. What models incorporated the full lugged barrel? Any info is appreciated. Tree Rat.

TR,
I'm not 100% sure what you're asking. The tone of the message seems to imply that you're asking about a specific gun, one that you've got. But you haven't included any information on one, so I'm just not sure...
Let me give you the information that I have on the Model 14, and from there you can ask further questions...
Introduced in 1946 as the K-38 Target Masterpiece. It wore a newly developed micrometer click sight, had a 6" (rare with the 8 3/8") narrow, ribbed barrel, a short-throw trigger, and an anti-backlash trigger.
In 1957 it became the Model 14.
The 14-1 started in 1959.
The 14-2 in 1961.
The 14-3 in 1967.
The 14-4 in 1977.
This version of the gun was discontinued in 1982.
In 1991 a new version of the Model 14 was introduced, this with a 6" full-lug barrel (like the 686).
This model was brought out as the 14-5, with an initial run of 2,000.
The 14-6 was introduced in 1994.
If you need information above and beyond that, I'll try to answer.

Mike - Sorry for the goofy post. You answered my questions except what was the difference in the -5 and -6? I`m looking at a -5 currently and just wanted some background. Tree Rat.

Ah. Gotcha. Glad I answered some of your questions.
I don't have my books at work with me right now, but this is what I seem to remember about the 14-5 and 14-6...
The 14-5 was the reintroduction of the Model 14, but with the heavy full-lug barrel.
The 14-6 had the same barrel config, but had a new rear sight configuration, was drilled and tapped for scope mounts (under the stock rear sight), and had the Hogue rubber grips instead of the S&W wood grips.
Apparently the 14-5 was NOT drilled and tapped for a scope mount.

Hi,
I was serching for K38 and found this thread.
I have a 14 in my hands now. It's marked "Mod-14" (no dash).
According to the further info, it's a pre-61 series, because there's no dash, but it doesn't have the top screw (the one up in the frame, near to the rear sight) and I thougt it would be more modern than 61.
My question is, can it be a real pre-61 ? And when did SW stoped to use the top screw ?

The models with that top screw is called a 5 screw model (the 4th screw is in the front of the triggerguard). S&W deleted that screw in 1955. They were named the K38 as the numerical naming system didn't start till after 1957.
