View Full Version : Drop safeties on a shotgun?

Excuse the ignorance, but is there a drop safety on a shotgun? How are most safeties on a shotgun? I know there's a safety switch on most shotguns, but if you drop one with the safety off, is there any chance of it going off? If not, what's preventing it?

Shotgun designs vary as much as Ferraris and Yugos. TTBOMK, guns sold in the US have to pass a 5 foot drop test.

Dave is right about the variety of guns out there. Quality varies from 'Built like a Swiss watch" to absolute junk. Different actions too.
Some shotguns are built without safties. Some purpose built single shot Trap guns have no safety. Most clays guns have the safety locked in the off position. My K80 is like this, the safety is locked off to prevent jerks from switching the safety on and causing me to miss the next shot. I pity the poor jerk who tries to drop my gun:mad:
I doubt that the average Mossberg, Remington or Ithaca will go off if dropped.
Some of those cheapie imported double guns I am not so sure about.
The safest gun is one that is unloaded with the action open.
