Can copper wire brushes really damage a barrel? Is there something better that should be used?

I don't think that copper would hurt a bore. I think that brass is more "springy" and better suited for the job. Most bore brushes are brass.

I've been using phosphor bronze brushes forever with excellent results...

the steel wire that forms the spine of the brush can do damage. use brushes that have a brass spine and phosphor-bronze bristle.

I sort of wonder where these ideas come from. We drive copper or steel jacketed groove diameter bullets down a hardened steel barrel at two or three thousand feet per second at pressures that engrave the rifling into the bullet, and then worry about whether a few passes with a bronze brush is going to hurt the same barrel. Wow!
