View Full Version : Taurus Raging Hornet

I was in a local gun shop Tuesday and saw what might be the most interesting revolver I have ever seen. It was a Taurus "Raging Hornet", which is basically a Raging Bull frame/cylinder chambered in .22 Hornet. I think it had a 7 or 8 shot capacity, can't remember exactly.

Man, I can just imagine poppin' crows and/or varmints with this thing! I think that with a good scope or dot sight this could quite possibly be one of the neatest handgun on the face of the earth! Has anyone shot one of these?

This is the first I have seen of it's kind. I'd never even heard of it until I saw it in the gun case. It definitely has my attention.

I like everything about it except the suggested retail price of $898 without a scope. For that kind of money I would rather put a .22 Hornet barrel on my T/C Contender or get a CZ527 (which is what I probably will do).

Pretty sure it is a 6 shot gun.

I've also seen it significantly cheaper
at gun shows.

The .22 Hornet is one hell of a round. You don't hear about it much now days, but I've taken deer with it. When I was active duty military I had a special ops sniper rifle chambered in the Hornet. Ass kicker! :D
It would be a great round in a pistol, but as I remember the ammo was pretty expensive.

JBP,

I think this one was priced just above $600. I'll have to look again if it's still there this weekend. It wasn't $900 though.

Yeah, the ammo price and local availability would probably be a pain. I don't guess it could be much more aggravating than trying to find Federal Gold Medal match or Black Hills match locally for my .308 though. :o

The Raging Hornet holds eight rounds.

I have seen the Raging Hornet but never fired one. I have built and shot Ruger Blackhawks in .22 Hornet and they are a blast (no pun intended). My customers all wanted them with 14" barrels but I could build them in any practical length. I still don't have one in my personal collection but one is on my "wish list" ;). Another, which I've also built, but haven't gotten around to for my personal collection, is a 7.62X39 on the old Ruger Blackhawk .357 Maximum frame. Given the price of the old Maximums it will be an expensive one (for me at least) to build. :(

Being a .22 Hornet freak (I own 7 of them, I think?) I am intrigued with the concept but I am still wondering about the accuracy? The Hornet shoots a small bullet and has limited power, they need to be accurate. I will just have to stick with my Anschutz Exemplar for may hornet pistol since it is magazine fed and my super 14" TC barrel is one at a time.

Chris,

First the desire for a .454 and now the Raging Hornet? They're going to revoke your "Minister" status at the Church of Glock if you're not careful. :)

The Hornet sounds interesting. I've seen these before but have never had the opportuninty to try one out. Shouldn't kick more than the .454 (at least I hope not).

As far as poppin' crows goes, you would have a lot less to clean up if you used the .454 on them....... :)

Joe,

Yeah, I guess the .454 would make a better anti-vehicle "roadblock gun" too, don't you think? I mean, unless they had a Kevlar radiator I think I could put them outta' bid'ness with a scoped 'Bull!! :D

Note: Just kiddin' of course. Despite past, ummmmmm... "results", the State of GA frowns on the use of small arms against vehicles. However, it's ok to smash into 'em wit' ya Crown Vic though. Go figure...

If there were trained "Interstate Pursuit Hard Target Interdiction Specialists" equipped with scoped/tripod'ed .50's posted on every other overpass ready to end high speed pursuits with a single well placed "center of timing chain cover" shot, how many people would run? No, I mean *TOWARD* them! :D

You really think kevlar is going to stop a .454? I don't. With a FMJ round I have no doubt it would penetrate an engine block.

LOL! BTW, you might want to check on this as I think the .454 might not qualify as a "small" arm. :)

So, tell us, which one did you buy today???

Joe, see my post under "which .454?"... :D

As for the price discussion above, Hot Shots has a polished stainless Hornet for $699 sticker price. As is the case with everything else, I'm sure Hornet prices differ greatly across the US. Just posting for comparison.

NJW,

I meant to include that Adventure Outdoors had a brochure on the Hornet that claims "Small Varmint Rifle accuracy levels". Just FYI...

I would call the Raging Hornet a good answer to the FN Five-seveN with it's MIL/LEO Only round. 8 rounds of the balistic equal in a revolver instead of an auto... the FN packs what was it 14? rounds of its wee little load? The R.H. may only hold 8 - but you can always carry 2 revolvers... ala John Woo!

I can tell you for a fact that the 22 hornet fired out of the Raging Hornet shoots almost flat out to 100 yards

Couldn't stand it any more - I just had to register and post on this thread. I am also a Hornet freak. I have guns in both the regular and the K-hornet.

If you are interest in single-actions in the .22 hornet - I can strongly recommend the BFR in the Hornet. Good shooting gun and very accurate. I got one of the early DM seris serial numbers and converted it to Bisley, Heck life doesn't get much better than that. From what I gather there are problems converting the later model BFR's to Bisley.

Welcome aboard ;-)

I saw a Taurus in .218 Bee a while back that I had to talk myself out of grabbing. The thing is a friend went through hell with Taurus over his .22 Hornet, sent it in twice and it came back just as it went in. No love whatsoever. I won't thake the chance meself on them.

yes... I love the "Hornets" as well...I've had pics of my "raging Squirrel" ;) on here before...

the gun is easy to shoot, ( no kick at all ) but ( mine anyway ) has a very tight barrel / cylinder gap... I'm thinking because of the bottle necked cartridge... so it starts scrubbing after 50 or so rounds of factory ammo...

a couple of my Hornet handguns... ( BTW... awesome Ruger, & welcome to the forum )
