I am researching a Winchester Model 70 .375 Magnum rifle. From some characteristics of the rifle I think it is an early production .375. Are there any sources of data listing Model 70 serial numbers against years of production?

There was a book out some years ago on the Model 70 that gave a LOT of information. I can't remember the author, but it MAY have been Ned Schwing, who has done some really nice books on Winchester guns.

Some of his books have tended to be a bit fact-light when it comes to production information, but the quality of the photography, and the general historical information, just can't be beat. Be sure to check out his work on the Model 42 shotgun, it's FANTASTIC.

George Maddis (sp?) also has written a little handbook that lists Winchester's serial numbers. You should be able to find it at a gunshow book dealer.

And, finally, I THINK, but I'm not certain, that the Blue Book may have some serial number information for Winchester in the reference section in the rear.
